How to Move & Deliver an Alaskan King Bed
An Alaskan King bed is 9 feet by 9 feet. The mattress alone weighs 120–220 pounds depending on the type. The frame adds another 100–200 pounds. You can't just toss this in the back of a truck – getting an Alaskan King into your bedroom requires planning, the right delivery method, and sometimes a creative approach to doorways and stairs.
Here's what you need to know before your bed arrives.
How Alaskan King Mattresses Actually Ship
The good news: most Alaskan King mattresses don't ship as a single 9-foot piece. That would be nearly impossible to deliver. Instead, most sellers use one of two approaches:
Measure Your Doorways and Hallways
Standard interior doorways in US homes are 32–36 inches wide (with the door removed, you might gain another inch or two). Hallways are typically 36–42 inches wide.
- Front door width (exterior doors are usually 36 inches – wider than interior)
- Bedroom door width (often 30–32 inches – the tightest point)
- Hallway width between front door and bedroom
- Any turns in the hallway (90-degree turns are the hardest)
- Stairway width and headroom (if bedroom is upstairs)
For modular mattresses (shipped in sections), the individual pieces are usually 36–54 inches wide and will fit through a 32-inch doorway when angled. For roll-packed mattresses, the box dimensions are what matter – check with your seller.
Frames are usually shipped disassembled (rails, slats, headboard as separate pieces) and are not a delivery problem.
Stairways: The Real Challenge
If your bedroom is upstairs, stairways add complexity:
Delivery Options Compared
Most Alaskan King sellers offer one of three delivery methods:
Curbside/Threshold Delivery
The most common. A freight carrier drops the mattress at your front door or garage. You're responsible for getting it inside and upstairs. This is included free with most sellers.
- Who offers it: Alaskan King Bed Co., Custom Mattress Factory, Wyoming King Beds, Nolah Sleep
- Cost: Usually free (included in price)
- What to know: You'll need at least one other person to help carry sections inside
White-Glove Delivery
A delivery team brings the mattress inside, carries it to your bedroom, and sets it up. Some will even remove packaging.
- Who offers it: AdultBunkBeds.com (included in $595 flat delivery fee), Sleep Boutique (available in Canada)
- Cost: $200–$600 extra where available
- What to know: Worth it if you have stairs, tight hallways, or nobody to help carry
Standard Shipping (FedEx/UPS)
For compressed or roll-packed mattresses that ship in boxes.
- Who offers it: Nolah Sleep, Custom Mattress Factory
- Cost: Usually free
- What to know: Boxes can still weigh 100+ pounds. Have someone help you carry the box to the bedroom before unboxing.
Frame Delivery Is Usually Easy
Bed frames ship disassembled – headboard, side rails, slats, and hardware in separate boxes or bundles. Even at Alaskan King size, no individual piece is wider than a standard doorway. Assembly takes 30–60 minutes with two people.
The exception: some solid wood platform frames have large platform sections. Ask your seller for individual piece dimensions if you're concerned about doorway clearance.
Delivery Checklist
Before your Alaskan King bed arrives, run through this list:
Before Ordering
- ☐Confirm how the mattress ships (modular sections vs single box)
- ☐Get box/section dimensions from the seller
- ☐Measure bedroom doorway, hallway, and any stairway turns
- ☐Decide on delivery method (curbside vs white-glove)
Before Delivery Day
- ☐Clear the path from front door to bedroom – remove hallway furniture, rugs, door stops
- ☐Remove the bedroom door from its hinges (gains 1–2 inches of clearance)
- ☐If upstairs, clear the stairway completely
- ☐Have at least one helper available for curbside deliveries
- ☐Have a box cutter ready for roll-packed mattresses (let the mattress expand for 24–48 hours before sleeping on it)
After Setup
- ☐Zip or connect mattress sections securely
- ☐Allow compressed mattresses 24–72 hours to fully expand
- ☐Check that the frame is level and all support legs are touching the floor

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you fit an Alaskan King bed through a standard doorway?
Not in one piece. But most Alaskan King mattresses ship in 2–3 modular sections, each 36–54 inches wide, which fit through standard 32–36 inch doorways when angled.
How much does an Alaskan King mattress weigh?
120–220 pounds depending on materials. Foam mattresses are lightest (120–150 lbs), hybrids are mid-range (150–200 lbs), and latex is heaviest (180–220 lbs). Modular mattresses divide this weight across 2–3 sections. See our full weight guide for details.
Do I need white-glove delivery for an Alaskan King bed?
Not necessarily. If your bedroom is on the ground floor with wide doorways, curbside delivery plus a helper is fine. If your bedroom is upstairs with tight turns, white-glove delivery is worth the extra $200–$600.
Can an Alaskan King bed go upstairs?
Yes, as long as the mattress ships in sections (most do). Individual sections fit through stairways. The main concern is tight turns at landings – measure your landing width before ordering.
How long does Alaskan King bed delivery take?
Most oversized beds are made to order. Expect 1–2 weeks for production (some sellers) up to 4–6 weeks (custom manufacturers). Nolah Sleep ships in 3–5 business days from stock. Check lead times on our Alaskan King bed guide.
