Texas King Bed

Bedroom featuring an extra-long Texas King bed for tall sleepers

Eighty inches by ninety-eight inches. Texas King is what a king bed would have been if the standard had been designed around sleepers above six feet. Same eighty-inch width as a standard king. Eighteen inches longer.

The size lands well for couples where one person is tall enough that their feet hang off a regular king, without going up to the full square footage of an Alaskan or Wyoming King. A standard-king bedroom usually accommodates the length, give or take a foot. Most bed frames you already own will not fit, since the length adds the difference. Sheets and fitted linens have to be Texas King specific or the corners stay loose.

Common Mistakes When Buying a Texas King

Confusing Texas King dimensions

A Texas King is 80" wide × 98" long – it's the same width as a standard King but 18 inches longer. This extra length is the whole point: it's designed for tall sleepers. Some buyers expect it to be wider too, but that's what the Wyoming King (84" × 84") or Alaskan King (108" × 108") offers.

Ordering a California King frame instead

A California King (72" × 84") is narrower and shorter than a Texas King (80" × 98"). They're not interchangeable. You need a frame specifically built for 80" × 98" dimensions. See our Texas King bed frames page.

Forgetting the room is rectangular too

A Texas King's length (98", or 8'2") means you need a room that's at least 11–12 feet in the long direction. A 12×12 room works, but a 12×14 room is more comfortable because the bed's footprint is asymmetric. The extra depth gives walking room at the foot.

Assuming standard King sheets will stretch

At 80" wide, a standard King fitted sheet (made for 76") might technically stretch onto a Texas King – but it'll be 18 inches too short in length. The sheet will pop off the mattress corners constantly. Buy Texas King-specific bedding.

Texas King Bedding Availability

Texas King bedding is more limited than Alaskan King or Wyoming King options, but the key pieces exist:

Available

  • Sheet sets – OCOCHI, Mattress Insider, and Big Mattress Co. carry Texas King (80" × 98") sheet sets. Custom Mattress Factory also carries sheets for their Original Texas King mattress. Prices: $80–$300.
  • Comforters – OCOCHI and Big Mattress Co. offer Texas King comforters.

Limited

  • The Texas King size is the least commonly stocked of the three major oversized sizes. Expect fewer fabric and color choices compared to Alaskan King bedding.
  • Mattress protectors – limited availability; check OCOCHI first.
  • Decorative bedding – very limited. You may need to go custom for shams and bed skirts.
