Frame Types That Work at Wyoming King Scale

A Wyoming King (84" × 84") is more manageable than an Alaskan King but still requires a purpose-built frame:

Platform frames

The standard choice. At 84" × 84", a platform frame is easier to source and less expensive than Alaskan King equivalents. Most sellers offer both wood and metal options.

Slatted platforms

Same 3-inch maximum slat spacing rule as larger beds. At 84" wide, center support is still important – a single center beam with legs is sufficient.

Upholstered frames

Available from Wyoming King Beds and AdultBunkBeds.com. The 7-foot width is still too wide for most doorways as a single piece, so these typically ship with the headboard separate from the base.

Adjustable bases

Some sellers offer adjustable (split) bases in Wyoming King size - Engineered Sleep and Big Mattress Co. have options. These are split down the middle so each side can adjust independently.

Standard King frames won't work

A King frame is 76" × 80" – 8 inches narrower and 4 inches shorter than a Wyoming King. The mattress will overhang on all sides.

Weight Support Requirements

A Wyoming King mattress weighs 90–160 lbs. With two adults, total load is 390–560 lbs.

Frame requirements:

  • Weight capacity: 800 lbs minimum, 1,000+ lbs recommended
  • Center support: Required – one center beam with at least 2 legs
  • Slat count: 12–18 slats across the 84" width
  • Leg count: 6 minimum (4 corners + 2 center)

The Wyoming King's square shape distributes weight evenly, which is an advantage over rectangular beds – there's no long unsupported span in one direction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Wyoming King frames easier to find than Alaskan King?

Slightly. The smaller 84" x 84" size means more manufacturers offer Wyoming King frames, and delivery is easier. However, they're still specialty items not found in regular stores.
