Frame Types That Work at Texas King Scale

A Texas King (80" × 98") has a unique challenge: the length. At 98 inches (over 8 feet), the frame needs strong lengthwise support to prevent bowing.

Platform frames

Work well, but pay attention to the lengthwise rails. At 98" long, the side rails need to be rigid – steel or hardwood, not thin particle board. Center support running the full length is important.

Slatted platforms

The slats run across the 80" width (similar to a standard King), so standard slatting works. The difference is in the lengthwise rails and center support beam, which need to span 98" instead of the usual 80".

Modular frames

A good option at this size. Two or three sections bolted end-to-end provide rigid construction without requiring a single 8-foot rail to be shipped.

Important

Texas King frames are less commonly stocked than Alaskan or Wyoming King frames. Big Mattress Co., Mattress Insider, and Custom Mattress Factory carry Texas King frames. Other sellers may build them to order.

Weight Support for Texas King

A Texas King mattress weighs 95–170 lbs. Total load with two adults: 395–570 lbs.

Frame requirements:

  • Weight capacity: 800 lbs minimum, 1,000+ lbs recommended
  • Center support: Required – one center beam running the full 98" length with at least 2 support legs
  • Slat count: 12–16 slats across the 80" width (same spacing as a standard King)
  • Leg count: 6 minimum (4 corners + 2 center)
  • Lengthwise rigidity: Because the frame is 98" long, the side rails must be strong enough to resist bowing. Steel or hardwood rails preferred.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a California King frame for a Texas King?

No. A California King frame (72" x 84") is narrower and shorter than a Texas King (80" x 98"). You need a frame specifically made for Texas King dimensions.
